New Year’s Eve Weather Showers for Some, Mild Temps for Most
Get ready for a New Year’s Eve with a mix of rain, mild temperatures, and possible travel disruptions. While some regions experience showers, much of the country will enjoy above-average warmth. Find out what to expect across the U.S. as we ring in 2025.
As the holiday season comes to a close, millions of travelers are set to take to the roads and airports—whether for New Year’s Eve celebrations or their journeys back home. Here’s a day-by-day guide on what to expect.
The latest atmospheric river will bring additional rain to the Pacific Northwest on Saturday. Snow will be widespread from the Cascades to the northern Rockies, but only areas far from the ocean, such as Montana and Idaho, will see new snowfall. Another storm system stretching from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast will mostly bring rain. The primary trouble spots will be in the Southeast, where thunderstorms, severe weather, and flash flooding are expected, and in southern New England, where freezing rain is possible.
The same two regions affected by rain on Saturday will remain soggy on Sunday. Travel delays are possible at major airport hubs like San Francisco, Seattle, and Atlanta due to the ongoing rain, while thunderstorms may develop in the Southeast. Most of the country will experience milder-than-average temperatures, with icy conditions limited to northern New England and the Northern Rockies.
The wet weather in the Pacific Northwest will begin to ease and shift eastward, bringing snow showers from Idaho to Colorado. Accumulating snow is possible in the Northern Plains as well. Meanwhile, the storm system that affected the East will move out to sea. Above-average temperatures will continue east of the Rockies, with highs in Texas likely reaching the 80s.
The same system that brought snow to the upper Plains will move into the Ohio River Valley and Great Lakes states on Tuesday. Although it will remain too warm for snow, precipitation will reach the I-95 corridor by evening. Those heading to Times Square for the New Year’s Eve celebration may want to bring rain gear, as showers are possible before midnight.
Rain showers may linger in New York City through the early hours of New Year’s Day, but a fast-moving system will bring gusty winds to New England by afternoon. Another system approaching the Pacific Northwest will deliver strong winds from Washington to Nevada, along with heavy rain and snow at higher elevations. Travelers at major hubs like Boston’s Logan and Chicago’s O’Hare may experience a bumpy ride.
