Tampa Bay Lightning to Host First-Ever Outdoor Hockey Game at Raymond James Stadium
The Tampa Bay Lightning will host their first-ever outdoor hockey game at Raymond James Stadium on February 1, 2026, as part of the NHL Stadium Series. This historic event, a long-held dream of minority owner Jeff Vinik, will feature the Lightning facing off against the Boston Bruins. The game follows the Florida Panthers’ 2026 Winter Classic, marking a major milestone in Florida’s hockey history.
Last week, Elliotte Friedman speculated on his 32 Thoughts podcast that the Tampa Bay Lightning’s silence regarding the rumored outdoor game in Florida could be due to the possibility that they would also be involved in the outdoor festivities. As he noted, One of the things I wondered was, why are the Lightning so quiet about an outdoor game going to Florida? I think it’s because they could be getting one too. I don’t think they’ll be playing each other, but it sounds like we’ll see outdoor games in Florida and Tampa.
Friedman went on to mention that the Florida Panthers would host a game with the Rangers at loanDepot Park, home of the Miami Marlins, for the 2026 NHL Winter Classic. The Lightning’s game, he speculated, would likely take place at Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His prediction came true when the league officially announced that the Lightning would host the Boston Bruins there for the Navy Federal Credit Union Stadium Series game on February 1, 2026.
Meanwhile, the Panthers will host their outdoor game, with the roof of the Marlins’ stadium providing more control over the environment—though it will still be a unique setup. The Lightning, however, will have the true outdoor experience, as they take over the Buccaneers’ stadium for their game. Though we would have preferred a matchup with the Nashville Predators, given their thrilling Stadium Series game in 2022, we understand the league’s decision to prioritize teams with broader national appeal, such as the Bruins and Rangers.
Ultimately, the opponent doesn't matter as much as the fact that Tampa Bay will finally host an outdoor game. This has been a long-held dream for minority owner Jeff Vinik, who has long sought this opportunity for his adopted home city. As Rob Higgins, Executive Director of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, put it, Hosting an NHL Stadium Series game at Raymond James Stadium has been our ‘white whale’ as a community for the last decade, and we’re excited to see this unprecedented dream finally come true.
This Stadium Series game will add to the growing list of major events hosted in Hockey Bay, USA, including two NHL All-Star Games, three Frozen Four tournaments, and recent Stanley Cup boat parades. While the event could face challenges—such as unpredictable weather or logistical issues—the excitement and anticipation surrounding the game are undeniable. Regardless of the obstacles, the festivities around the game, including the jerseys, ice technology, and tailgating, will make for an unforgettable experience. As someone who has attended several outdoor games, I can say that the event's energy and the surrounding festivities are just as important as the game itself. We’ll be there, and we hope you will be too.
