Tennis Star Daniil Medvedev Smashes Camera in Frustrated Outburst During Tough Australian Open Win
Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, displayed frustration during a challenging opening-round victory at the Australian Open. After a tense exchange with wildcard Kasidit Samrej, Medvedev smashed a camera in anger, earning a warning from the chair umpire. Despite losing the third set, Medvedev regained composure and won the match in five sets. He later expressed surprise at Samrej’s performance and will face Learner Tien in the second round.

Daniil Medvedev vented his frustration during a challenging opening-round victory at this year’s Australian Open, using his racket to strike a camera attached to the net. The world No. 5 eventually triumphed over Thailand's Kasidit Samrej in five sets—6-2, 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2—but struggled against an opponent ranked 418th in the world. Medvedev’s tension reached its peak at the end of the third set, as Samrej served to claim a 2-1 lead in the match.
During a tense rally, Samrej got fortunate when his shot clipped the net, causing Medvedev to change direction and sprint after the ball. The Russian managed to reach it in time but, off balance, was unable to respond to Samrej’s ensuing cross-court winner.
As Samrej apologized for the fortunate shot, Medvedev, visibly frustrated, took his anger out on a small camera positioned at the center of the net, breaking both the camera and his racket in the process.
The chair umpire then issued Medvedev a warning for racket abuse.
The 2021 US Open champion went on to lose the third set as Samrej, a wildcard entry in the tournament, moved closer to the biggest win of his career at his grand slam debut.
However, the 23-year-old’s hopes were dashed as Medvedev regained his composure and claimed a hard-fought five-set victory.
In his post-match interview, Medvedev appeared in good spirits and did not address his outburst at the end of the third set. Instead, he expressed surprise at his opponent’s level of play.
If he plays like this every match, his life can be good – money, girls, casino, whatever, Medvedev joked. I wish he could play like this every match.
Medvedev, a three-time finalist and last year’s runner-up at the Australian Open, will now face 19-year-old American Learner Tien in the second round.
